What is IELTS?

IELTS- International English Language Testing System is an English Language proficiency test taken by working professionals and students to study in countries where the medium of instruction is English.

IELTS is a widely taken proficiency test managed by three bodies British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. There are 4 sections of the IELTS test, based on which a student's understanding of a language is assessed.

IELTS is mandatory for studying in Australia and is accepted by universities in the UK, US, Canada and New Zealand.

There are two types of IELTS Tests- IELTS Academic and IELTS General. in which the reading and writing sections vary. IELTS Academic is for working professionals and students to pursue higher education at universities abroad. IELTS General is for people looking to migrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the UK or students planning to study in high school or a vocational training program. No matter which IELTS test you take, it is recognized internationally and is valid for two years

What is the Scoring Scale for IELTS?

IELTS follows a grading system using scores from 1-9 to evaluate your performances. The cumulative score of listening, reading, writing and speaking offers an overall band score.

  2. Reading score reported on a 0-9 band scale, with 0.5 band increment
  3. Speaking score reported on a 0-9 band scale, with 0.5 band increment

How many times in a year is the IELTS exam held?

IELTS takes place only on specific days of the year. You can access the whole schedule which can vary depending on the city by following the given link www.ielts.org

How many times can I take the IELTS?

One can take the IELTS unlimited number of times. But it is advisable to not appear multiple times as it will affect the scores.

What is the validity of the IELTS exam?

IELTS score is valid for 2 years from the date the test was taken.

How soon will I get my score?

The scores will be available 13 days after the exam date.

Which score will be considered if I take IELTS multiple times?

Yes, you do need to have the IELTS score with you at the time of applying

Do I need to have the IELTS score at the time of applying to universities?

You will receive the scores for the math and verbal sections the moment you finish the exam. Official scores (with scores for AWA) will take about 7-10 days to reach you.

How to Choose my Exam Date?

If you are opting for a paper based test then the IELTS has about 48 fixed dates in a year which comes upto 4 test dates in a month.
The tests are held on Saturdays and Thursdays.

Up to 7 days a week, 3 times a day.

Which medium can I use for the test ?

For the Listening and Reading components you must write in pencil. For the Writing test, you can use a pen or a pencil as per your convenience.
